At least 64 civilians were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. Over 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with shooting, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the security action, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of a major illegal networks.

Government representatives said no less than 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Community members have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Security forces stated more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the raid, along with multiple guns.
